A Structured Society
The chinese believed their empire had divine athority meaning he had a link between heaven and earth. They believed if their leader did a good job, China would thrive, if not the heavens showed their displeasure with earthquakes and natural disastures. The Chinese emperor enforced a complex bureaucracy. This entailed governement taxes, giving up part of their crop, and owed the governement a month's worth of labor or military service. Wudi's government had more than 130,000 people employed under his rule. The bureaucracy included 18 ranks of civil service jobs or jobs that citizens got by taking exams. These exams tested the citizens knowledge of Confucianism, teachings of Confucius from 400 years prior. Confucius had taught respect, genorsity, truthfulness, diligence, and kindness. Wudi had wished his governemnt officals to have these qualities, he set up a school where peole could study his beliefs.
