How did Islam affect and influence both African civilizations?
Islam influenced both of these empires in many ways. It spread through North Africa by conquest, south of the Sahara Islam spread mostly through trade. Muslim merchants and teachers lived in the states south of the Sahara and introduced their religion there. Ghana's rulers eventually converted to Islam and the Muslim advisers helped the king rule his kingdom. Most of Ghana's African rulers accepted Islam but many people in the empire clung to their beliefs. Much of the population never converted.
Mana Musa was a devoted Muslim and went on a hajj to Mecca from 1324 to 1325. After his return her ordered the construction of new mosques at the trading cites of Timbuktu and Gao. Timbuktu became one of the most valuable cities of the empire. Many Muslim judges, doctors, religious leaders, and scholars from far and wide were attracted to the city. They flocked to Timbuktu's outstanding mosques and universities.
